Wordless Wednesday:Nests

Look Mommy! The Bean loves her nest!

Look Mommy! It's my very own nest!

........Baby Bug does not nest, she perches.

The Force Is Strong With Hubby

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and kind words of encouragement during a really stressful time. You've only reinforced my words about family!

Things are pretty much back to normal now. Well-with a lot less sleep and a much higher baseline anxiety level. We have been on a pretty exhausting med schedule since getting home last night-alternate pain meds/fever reducers every 3 hours plus antibiotics every 6 hours-but our little girl has learned to pretty much sleep through her "dosings" and I've lived on less sleep. The important part is because of the meds Baby Bug's fever broke and she's staying around 99 degrees even. Today she got down and played, giggling and talking and cruising around just like normal. I was so happy to see that I actually cried with relief! Of course, she's still mostly nibbling at her food and we still have to cajole her to drink fluids-though she is LOVING the sudden influx of sugary, delicious (hydrating) Otter Pops-but other than a little food/drink hesitancy she's doing fantastic!

I have definitely gotten a lot more generally nervous and worrysome, but that's how I end up acting about long term issues. Hubby says I like to "talk them to death". He says I should "relax". Easy for HIM to say-he's the Jedi-Zen-Master "emotionally stable" one.

Everything will be fine, he says.

Don't worry about what you can't control, he says.

Look for the positive in every situation, he says.

Thanks Master Fortune Cookie, but if it's alright with you I'm going to sit here and go over every possible scenario, every possible course of action, and every possible outcome until I have more contingency plans than the Pentagon...because if that's not healthy I don't know what is.

Honestly though-I am so grateful for (if slightly sarcastic at) Hubby's strength and his quiet, exceedingly calm nature. He maintains balance in The Force, and it is good.

I'm running a little slow, and a little thin, but I'm trying to get 'up and around' to visit all of you. I'm trying hard to return to my normal routine-you know, for the next 11 days until The Bean is born and entirely destroys my schedule.

Just The Facts, Ma'am

This post is not going to be witty. Or well organized. Or grammatically correct. I just wanted to let you all know what is going on over here-today has been insane.

First, we found out Hubby had to work this morning, rather than working his normal graveyard shift....which meant I had to reschedule my 11:20am doctor's appointment. Except that it turns out I couldn't do that, because my doc was booked until next Monday. I was NOT going to wait, so I decided to take the kids with me.

FUN.

Actually the kids were pretty good, considering that they're little kids and all. The doctor still gave me a big lecture about how it is so much easier if I don't bring my "other children". I wanted to look at him and say, "You know? You're so right! I should have let the big one watch the little one. He's 5 now, he really should be taking on more responsibility." Instead I said nothing.

Then he checked my cervix. I have not moved one single solitary centimeter. I have not effaced a fraction of one percent. All of the pain I've been having has done, literally, nothing. Talk about wanting to scream and yell and cry. It looks like this baby will be just like the other two. Lucky me that means I'll get to hang out until the 18th like this.

Because I took the car (so that I could get all of us to the doctor's office) that meant that I had to go pick Hubby up from work. First I cruised by the house, let Baby Bug take an hour nap while I logged my complaint about unproductive labor into Twitter, and then we ran off to grab Daddy. Everything was fine. Everything was great. I mean, it was a long frustrating day, but no big deal. Hubby always makes me feel better.

After picking Hubby up, we ran into the store to grab a gallon of milk and Hubby mentioned that Baby Bug was acting weird. I told him that I'd awakened her in the middle of a nap and he said, "Oh, that must be it."

Then we drove home. We were literally in our driveway when I turned around to tell Monkey something (I have no idea what) and I saw that Baby Bug had turned blue all around her mouth and hands, and was convulsing. Her eyes were rolled back into her head and she was entirely unresponsive. We dashed her into the house and called 911. Her seizure lasted two whole minutes this time, and afterwards she was still not responding to her name and she wasn't lifting her left arm.

The paramedics came, and Baby Bug and I went by ambulance to our hospital (Hubby and Monkey followed). Her fever (which was literally non existant an hour before) was 104.8 and her pulse was well over 210bpm. She was still mostly unresponsive, and still not using her left arm.

I was hysterical. I didn't even have the ability to go into The Mommy Zone-I just bawled my eyes out. Hubby, as always, was the rock of the entire situation while they poked and prodded and hooked Baby Bug up to about a thousand monitors. They filled her to her eyeballs with medications...and then we waited.

After about two hours, her fever came down to 101.5 and she returned to normal once again. As far as they could tell, she didn't sustain any type of permanent damage from the seizure, thank God. The bad news is that they determined it was another febrile siezure, which means she did in fact have an infection (this time it was a UTI). They said that since this has happened again, it is very likely that she will continue to have febrile seizures with most if not all of her childhood infections. And since febrile seizures often occur before any other symptoms, it means that the very first indication that she is sick is likely to be a seizure. This makes me pretty much unglued. How am I supposed to help her? How am I supposed to prevent her from having seizures if I don't even know she's sick until she has one?

Where can I buy a plastic bubble?!

Hubby has remained absolutely steadfast during this whole event, and even took off work (though we certainly can't afford it) so that the kidlets I didn't have to be alone tonight. Monkey dealt with the situation well, and I am surprised but very happy that he didn't panic as is usually his tendency in stressful situations. I could not have dealt with more panic. I am exhausted. Absolutely positively exhausted to the very center of my being in every possible way-and I have completely cracked mentally and emotionally.

However the most important thing is that Baby Bug is sleeping peacefully. She is still running a 101 fever, but is on a constant med cycle that will keep it low. When we woke her up for her last dose she was happy and normal and appeared entirely healthy except for her extra pink cheeks and her hot-to-the-touch skin. She's okay. That's what matters.

I'm off to try to get some rest, even if it's not sleep. I don't know how much I'll be around in the next couple of days, but I'll keep you all updated.

Let The Freak Out Commence

It happens no matter what you do-even if you taped your eyes open, never ate, wore adult diapers, and did nothing but stare at your child all day every day eventually something not so great would happen to them. Sadly there is no Mommy secret to stop life from happening to our precious babies, we just have to learn how to cope with the idea that things happen. This is not an easy task. When some kind of emergency situation comes up with my kids I go into what I like to call "The Mommy Zone".

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of troubled mind; a journey into an eerily calm land which appears with the arrival of emergencies and disappears just as quickly. That's the signpost up ahead — your next stop, The Mommy Zone.
For reasons totally biological and having nothing to do with me, the minute something goes wrong I become hyper-rational, intensely focused, deliberate, and methodical. I develop the ability to project serenity and comfort to my loved one in need (I also happen to behave like this when something happens to Hubby), and minister calmly to their immediate needs and emotional stability. Like I said, this is totally not about my character but instead 100% about chemicals or hormones or some other such uncontrollable body function-still it does come in handy. I really am an ideal person to have around in a bad situation.....just make sure to give me space once things get back to 'situation normal' because I'm cracking apart on you like Humpty Dumpty.

Tonight was a perfect example of "The Mommy Zone". Baby Bug has in the past few days developed a rash, with no other symptoms. No big deal-this isn't my first kid. I ask around and other people confirm my conclusion that it's probably viral-which means there is nothing the doc can do-so I'm okay with that. Then today Baby Bug's rash is 99% gone, and all of a sudden she starts running a fever. It feels like a pretty high fever (which of course I can't take because I can't find our thermometer) but she's acting normally so I don't panic. Then I lay her down for bed and she starts shaking uncontrollably.

I will totally admit that I have no idea how long this lasted. [Time does not exist in "The Mommy Zone".] I call her name, then roll her onto her side facing me and note her behavior in exhaustive detail. Immediately following I check for signs of injury (bitten tongue, petechiae (pinpoint bruising), etc). Then I cuddle with Baby Bug for a moment-who by the way not only doesn't show any sign of illness but seems darn right happy clapping her hands, talking baby talk, and snuggling-after which I dress her for outdoors, load her into the car, and drive her completely calm to the emergency room.

Once in the ER I am discussing in precise, unemotional detail what happened while playing with a very happy Miss Bug. Baby Bug makes fast friends with every nurse and doctor who walks by the room, waving and batting her eyelashes and talking merrily to them while I pet her head and discuss the doctor's opinion that she had a febrile seizure (a generally harmless type of seizure associated with sudden temperature spikes in infants and toddlers). They give her a blood draw, and take a urine sample by catheter (during which I help to hold her down and console her) to figure out what kind of infection could have caused the seizure, and then patiently read to her until they come in and tell me she has a viral infection, but based on her blood draw/antibody dealie she should be getting over it soon.

Thanksforcominginitsnobigdealgoodbye.

So I get back into the car with Baby Bug, drive all the way home and then put her to bed, then pack Hubby's lunch, and send him off to work. I talk to my sister and tell her what happened-calmly, because she's still a brand new first time mom and scares easily.

Then I can feel the panic raising in my stomach, so I nudge my sister off the phone and I do what I always do after any coolly handled emergency-I vomit like a sorority girl on MTV Spring Break. Then I cry uncontrollably, obsess about every single possible thing that could have happened in the situation I just dealt with, and then research every single preventative measure I can take in the future (which isn't fun when, as with febrile seizures, there are no preventative measures). Then, of course, there is a lot more crying and a little more vomiting.

And, this time, some blogging. So in conclusion, sorry if this post is a scrambled mess...the good news is everything is back to normal-the bad news is that means this post is coming from the other (more panicky) side of "The Mommy Zone".

Our Girl Is Here!

Baby Bug was finally born! She was born February 15th at 4:40pm. She ended up weighing only 6lbs 9oz (I guess ultrasounds aren't that accurate, huh?) and was 19 inches long, but she is healthy. She is, by the way, also adorable.

They didn't break my water on Thursday like they said that they would because-for some freakish reason-I still wasn't 4cm yet. Of course, that made me insane with rage and agony upset about that, so my doc went ahead and scheduled the amnio at the butt crack of dawn the next morning (7:45am should not exist when one is 9 bizillion months pregnant). It took until 11:30 to get back the results and then we started the pitocin drip at 11:50.

I got my epidural around 2pm (I don't know exactly when...I was kind of occupied...) and after that it was aaaaaaaaaalllllllll gooooooooood. The only thing I felt was a little barfy. I can handle barfy, I've been doing it for 9 months give or take. The nurse came in about quarter after 4 to check me and I was 10cm and ready, so we called up the doc and had that baby! I only had to push two times, and I didn't rip or tear or anything! I think that my labor, by far, is the easiest labor I have ever heard of...I am a lucky lucky mama-I felt great after I had her. Except for the excruciating gallbladder attacks I had-three in a row!-later that night, but I guess you can't win 'em all.

So, you ask, if we had her on the 15th why did it take until the 18th to post about it? All I have to say is do you know what it's like to try to get online with a 4 year old boy and a newborn baby girl in the house? It takes something just short of an act of God to make an exhausted newly post partum mama rob herself of an hour of sleep to brag on the internet to complete strangers. But I'll do it.

Last Minute Panic

This baby is a freaking planet. Not that I'm calling my daughter fat or anything. I just seriously think that the girl is running out of room in there! At least, that's my assumption when she has her foot lodged under my ribcage and her head bashing into my hips repeatedly like a battering ram....maybe it's not that. Maybe she just doesn't like me. Or maybe it was something I ate. It's a mystery-but I'm going to go with the 'huge bun small oven' theory. Seems plausible.

Especially after talking to my MIL. I found out that my husband (unbeknownst to him or me) was actually a premie. It wouldn't normally be an occasion for shock except the part where he was a 7lb+ baby at 34 weeks! That's why we'd always assumed he was full term. Appearantly he was just the biggest baby in the history of mankind. (I think I'm allowed some hyperbole here.) MIL thinks that his due date was wrong. I certainly freaking hope so-I don't want a 12 pound baby! Correction: I do want her. I just don't want to have to give birth to her. At least not vaginally. Good grief!

The hugeness of Baby Bug is just one thing I am thinking about now that we are staring down at the induction day. (February 21st is not very far away, you know.) While I am practically jumping out of my skin with the excitement of not being pregnant anymore (especially after last night's gallbladder attack left me with only 3 1/2 hours of sleep to function on) I am starting to get that OMG-SHES-ALMOST-HERE caught with your pants down feeling. You know the one-it keeps you up at night when you should be sleeping during the last month of your pregnancy. That panicky sensation that there is something missing but you can't remember what you're forgetting to save your life.

I keep wandering around my house thinking about all the things we need. It seems like we have them, but every time I am almost reassured that everything is in place I realize I forgot something and it sends me into a cold sweat. If I forgot that what else am I forgetting? Our hospital bags are packed, but I forgot our mini shampoos. They do NOT furnish these at our hospital so that could have been very ugly when we came home from the hospital to greet our son (and my MIL and step FIL) looking like kitty vomit. I also realized that since the Monkey is spending time with grandma and grandpa while Baby Bug is born I should pack him a bag too. I realized this just right this second. See? More things pop up all the time.

I need a Tums. These hormones are killing me.

On the plus side, everything is all set up as far as baby accessories go. Put together, and decorated appropriatly. We share a room (and, with Monkey and now probably Baby Bug) a bed with our kids while we are breastfeeding so that mommy doesn't have to get her happy butt aaaaallllllllllllllllll the way out of bed and aaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllll the way to the baby's room 3 to 6 times a night-but sharing a room with the baby means no excess baby floof so we had to choose our accessories wisely-although she still does have both a bassinet and a crib thanks to Hubby's ingenous spacial skills. The highlight of my extravaganza was picking out her crib set. It is so adorable if I do say so myself. And it was totally affordable-we're on a budget here people! What do you think? [Obviously this is a store picture.]

See...girly but not so girly it makes you want to puke and die (no ruffles or other such nonsense). I think I did well. At least something is prepared!

Ready...Get Set...Wait!

Today we finally got scheduled in for our induction! We are on the books-in ink-and ready...to wait.

The big day is February 21st at the butt-crack of dawn. Literally-it will be dark out or just barely dawning when we arrive at the hospital at 5:45am. I guess our doc likes to do his inducing before breakfast. Ha.

Being induced on the 21st gives Baby Bug some incentive for a quick and easy labor though. If she wants her own birthday she'll have to be born in 18 hours or less (a feat Monkeypants wasn't compelled to accomplish, being born 23 hours and 47 minutes after his induction) because hubby's birthday is on the 22nd. Not that Hubby minds sharing his birthday-he thinks having our daughter on his birthday would be the coolest present ever-and while babies are certainly better than cake I can understand the desire to have your own special day....but if she wants it she'll have to boogie her booty through the birth canal!

I can't believe that we are only 37 days away from meeting our sweet little Baby Bug...I'm so excited I can barely stand it!
