Mondays Our Way:Unschooling Gets Press?

Behold-Fox News brings you a very short moment of reflection about unschooling.

Some thoughts I had:

What do PUBLIC SCHOOL high school drop outs have to do with unschoolers? Isn't that more of a symptom of a public school problem?

If a kid wants to be an astronaut, he'll also want to learn calculus in order to achieve his goal-just as any toddler who wants to walk will first crawl to achieve their ultimate goal.

A lot of unschooled children need to be structured learning? Hmmmm....words for thought LOL.

What do you think about this interview? What, if any, are your questions about unschooling that I might be able to answer for you?

Due to a lack of speakers I could not hear the interview, but I do know that most press homeschooling gets is negative. Just something you have to deal with as a homeschooler...we learned that quickly. The homeschooling families they chose to put on Wife Swap or Trading Spouses used to drive me NUTS! They only put the crazies on there.

Unschooling is not something I would have been comfortable with when we homeschooled Manga Dork, but I have seen some children who were thriving on it. I also saw some children who were badly in need of structure. Unschooling success is in the hands of the is a big responsibility. You have to do what works best with your child and tell everyone else to mind their own business.

I don't know a lot about unschooling. I will admit to being a little uncomfortable with some of the stuff I do know...but I know better than to judge what parents choose for the children.

I'm a huge proponent of school choice...I am a founding member and on the board of trustees of my children's charter school and believe choice in education will be the saving grace of our school system!

That was a stupid interview. LOL! I totally agree with the man and the lady had nothing to add to the interview.
Unschoolers and drop outs are totally unrelated. I think she should have looked into what she was to be talking about before her appearance. Was she a teacher?

I think the life coach really had no idea what the interview was about and had nothing to bring to the table. Unschooling has nothing to do with children who drop out of school. It's a term for one method of educating children. A poor interview and the researchers could have done a better job in picking speakers.

Though to addthat we are not unschoolers but prefer a more structured approach ourselves. Everyone is different and that's just what works for us.

I've never heard of unschooling. When I saw this post I thought maybe it was a new way of saying homeschooling?

I must be really out of the loop here, lol. From what I've read quickly about unschooling, I can see how some might have success with it but I personally wouldn't take that approach with my children. We're homeschoolers and the stucture is something we'd like to keep.
